Dedicated to all the ogres that
have died in my name
"I'm a very new newbie"
After beating the WarCraft II single player campaigns, I wanted to have some team vrs team
multiplayer action. It was fun kicking
a classmate's ass in WarCraft I and II, and I looked to the far horizen for new
blood to spill. Since he didn't like
my crude newbie rushes,
he always made excuses that he couldn't play WarCraft II.
So bored one day, I decided to make haste and check out Concentric's
(an ISP provider) advertised free multiplayer match service called The Game Connection (or just GC).
The first game I played when I arrived was against a newbie by the name of Khalle I believe.
I won that game, and wondered if I'd ever find a worthy challenger in WarCraft II.
I finally realized my newbie status (well back then I'd probably just say "I'm not a newbie...I'm just
kinda rusty") when I played a game against 3 rushers.
Me and my newbie allys were defeated bad, and I finally felt excited since I had a
challenge. For the
next few days I played several games and constantly got my ass kicked.
I yerned for revenge, so I followed a WarCraft II player by the name of Mantix99 around to get good.
I figured I would have to arm myself with optimal building and unit output
strategies to prepare for the deadly onslaught so I payed close attention to Maxtix99's
production.
It paid off, within a week I defeated Nra7,
one of the players that kicked my ass early on.
The funny part was when after I won the game, after returning he
said "How did you get so good?...You really sucked yesterday...So who are you
really?" In reality I still sucked, but my skill level at that point was an advanced beginner,
I still had alot to learn but at least I stopped dying the horrible newbie death.
BoG
After 3 weeks of playing, I finally challenged Mantix99 to a 1 on 1. I rushed
him unsuccefully (and lost) but did a good enough job of it though since he
invited me to join his clan, composed of Canyon1man and him. I hunted out
cman and we
became a duo and became good allies. When I first met cman since he
used to urinate on Woodfam so much. Eventually, out clan joined up with Gurka,
Hattarick, and Rickr to form Brotherhood of Gurka (BoG). We were one of the
best clans in GC (like 8bals clan would stand a chance...hahaha), but too
bad we never really had any clan wars (only the internal clan wars).
The Incos
The first thing I remember about the Incos was how destructive they (BLuD) were
whenever playing against them. Seeing BLuD was an awesome player I set out
to defeat him. I did what I could but his skills were far superior than mines and
he alwaysgot me good in the end. I did manage to grush the hell out of him
and had him narrowed to one gold mine. He handled my attempts to kill his peons like
a pro and rebuilt despite my best attempts to stop him (I realize now my only WarCraft II skills
at this stage were making lots of grunts and plain ogres). Being unhappy at how I sucked
I had a few unkind words for him, but he was cool and laughed. Not being discourged, I
changed strategy and tryed
to play defensivly against him...next thing I know a bunch of sappers were knocking
at my door! My orge mound, blacksmith, and
barracks would be destroyed with extreme prejuidice no matter what. Funny part is I had money,
but no buildings! Another game he sappered me by a
tiny gap in my trees (I was 2 o'clock) and I kept trying to rune/block the
damn gap, but he got around it. After that game I figured it isn't worth trying so hard
to defeat him, better to learn from him and
join him as an ally. It was the start of a great allience and we had fun playing
against newbies and stuff...hehehe He told all about
his good friend Jza (aka DEATHDEALER), and I eventually
met him in a chat channel. Before I even said hi to him, he knew who I was
because of BLuD. For our first game together we allied up on 3vrs3.pud in a 2on2 game.
I was top left and he was somewhere around middle
right. Being new to this pud I played pretty bad, but he
slaughtered one of our oppenents, while I was unsuccessfully trying to kill
the oppenent right below me. Then he came out of nowhere, and slaughtered that guy
below me! After
that, I knew he was an excellent player as BLuD claimed he was.
Guardian
This guy was kicking the ass out of tons of people the first day he logged
on at Game Connection. Thing was that he was really Smartdick, one of
the old GCers before I came on. He was pretty damn good, and had a very
solid defense that my rushes couldn't get past. He and whomever he was allying with
would kill me and my always newbie ally.
That is until I allied with BLuD and we kicked Guardian's
and Chris (Miker's little bro) ass together. I just kept Chris weak (I didn't
expand for some reason so couldn't just kill him) and BLuD did the rest (now I realize
how unfair that game was...poor Guardian).
Eventually I got Guardian to show me how he built
up early in the game and it taught me how to build up much faster than before
(I still kinda use some of it today). He made me from an advanced beginner to
a good one (I made like 3 times the peons...from like 8 to 20+)!
The End of CRIS
After a long summer of playing games it was time for my last year of high school and a part-time
job. I gradually spent less time
playing on Game Connection and so did alot of other people. With a 486 as a computer and
with a high disconnection rate is was kinda not worth playing on Game Connection anymore. I
started going on another "Game Connection" board but it was really laggy and not many people
really when on that either (ZeroWolf's hideout...including quite a few trash talkers).
My WarCraft II skill were becoming
more moderate during the whole time also. Well, I eventually closed my account
with CRIS, but I logged on using Zerowhore's account a few times (and played some great games
when people were there).
It wasn't long though till Game Connection was practicaly desserted. The only person left was
IronClaw Bdan, who I found out to be a potato farmer. Once I found out everyone moved onto
kali I hunted out on the Wizard's Castle and joined them in the "kali era."
The Coming of Kali
I logged on maybe a few time on kali and noticed some of the gang made it their new home.
But I was too busy so I never really spent much time on it. Once my job was over and I started
college (with ethernet connection!) I started to spend
some time on kali. I usually caught Ironclaw, TroLLBoY, Cman, Epmeat, DEATHDEALER,
SlntHntr, Vgod, and Reberly to name a few. I played Warcraft II (duh!) with everyone and
it as fun as hell...hehehe I also met StrateJaket and BizzarNage on kali. Stratejaket was
pretty cool and we became good online buddies and talked about forming our own clan.
I played a few games of WarCraft II here and there and then StarCraft came! Well, since I couldn't
play it multiplayer with my 486 (I lagged the game 4 to 5 times slower than normal!) I started
a WarCraft II clan with Bdan call orcsNSpace (Bdan would rather forget about that though).
We played for about 2 weeks but we stopped it after
awhile since we died to cheesy stratigies. After that, no one played war2 anymore really since they
were either gone or played StarCraft. I was getting sick of WarCraft II anyways.
I eventually left kali since it was so boring and everyone kept saying "Demi, get pentium!". I did
eventally come back when I got a Pentium II system in Novemember '98. I played a few games
with StrateJaket and before he left to Japan and started to play quite a bit of StarCraft with
Jza for the next 6 months.
The Final Chapter of WarCraft II
It was the summer of '99 and WarCraft II battle.net was going to come out soon (yeah right)
and Jza and I were finally through with StarCraft.
We talked about the good 'ol CRIS days a bit and how good we all used to be. We
decided that we needed to both get good again and played 30 1on1 games to get back in skill.
My skills were greatly updated; a few of the main things I learned was how to counter and
pull off cheesy early
stratagies (the smart way to tower people), got enough new building stratiges to go from
Town Hall to Fortress far faster than I could imagine, and most importantly I learned to
be far more aggresive player instead of the defensive player I used to be. Around that time
I met some of Jza's new allies like Thibes, Stark, BC, Somefatkid. We had played quite a bit
of WarCraft II and had plenty of fun games. Of course I spent most of my time allying with
Stratejaket since we always had fun killing newbies (BLuD's never around for newbie killing
fun anymore!) and doing dumb stratigies against self-acclaimed good players (so they can say that we were
"owned"...its sooo funny when they are willing to challenge us again and then they beg us to
ally them at the end). I had a great run of WarCraft II for the 3rd time, but it didn't last
as long as the first or second time. It was hard to get a challenging game with my allies unless we
played an internal game (and when we did get a challenging game I always seemed to screw up).
My WarCraft II career has been over since then, my accomplishments include the best
WarCraft II lagger in all
history, kicking my college roommate's all-mighty ass 1on1, and some the cool stratigies I
sometimes pull off when I have those moments where I'm just doing everything right.
Foreword
After all this time I can only say the following: WarCraft II is the greatest game ever (even
better than Star Control II I realize now). No
video game has ever been this fun for so long. WarCraft II also led to the only online community worth
bothering my time with, CRIS. The only bad part is that WarCraft II now has little reward -
victory eventualy becomes meaningless without a strong community (i.e. people that play regularly
and for the fun of the game). There are exceptions, mainly when you find some newbies on Battle.net
and do sapper raids on their towns (persistant newbies the the funniest players in the world).
I wonder what future game can possibly replace WarCraft II and bring back a good chunck of the
CRIS community. I realize
the way things are going now there will never be a better RTS than WarCraft II. Thats fine
though; video games don't end at the RTS gerne. There will be a better game than WarCraft II,
just don't count on it being a traditional RTS (or even a RPG-RTS whatever...you know what I'm
talking about...). Since most of CRIS likes all types of different game gernes, you never
know what can happen. The only real question is if this future great game will have the
multiplayer longlivity of WarCraft II...
